Trust Yourself “If we are not trusting ourselves—who and what are we trusting?”
I listen to my response to Edie’s inquiry as to why it is so important that
women trust ourselves on her internet radio program By, For & About Women. In
fact, the question has dogged me ever since. If we are not trusting ourselves
then we are clearly turning over our power to some one or some thing outside
of ourselves—family, friends, co-workers, society. While I strive to live my life in trust and follow my
guidance, I certainly have not done it 100% of the time. If I had a nickel
for every time I thought…’geez, wish I would have listened to myself’…I’d be
a well-to-do single gal. And as one wise woman pointed out to me over brunch:
“when we don’t listen to our intuition or trust ourselves it
costs us big—in money, time, resources, friendships, lovers, not to mention
the emotional and spiritual costs.” I suspect I am not the only one this lack of trust applies to;
why is it that we don’t trust ourselves? It seems to me that there may be a
deeper issue, particularly for women, as we continue to step into our wisdom.
As wise women, we are creating life from our soul’s desire. And
our soul’s desire speaks to our hearts to inspire us; our hearts speak to our
minds to co-create; and our minds speak to our bodies to manifest and bring
into form that which we desire. Lack of trust in oneself throws a wrench in
that creative process. In my interview
I give tips on how to identify when you are trusting yourself, red flags for
when you are not and how to build trust within yourself; I share from
personal experience about how intuition and psyght* have been the
driving force behind the creation and establishment of the Wise Women Foundation. I can assure you that it was thanks to the support of my friends
and colleagues who provided advice, connections and resources to help me
trust myself and follow my guidance that the Wise Women Foundation is growing
strong nearly 3 years later. In fact,
our network of women’s businesses and organizations not only provides a
support structure for you to follow your intuition and trust yourself, it
also fosters a sense of trust from the community. To learn more about
opportunities for support through the Wise
Women Web network of women in the healing arts and related mind, body,
spirit businesses/organizations click here. Many Blessings, *Psyght is a term I created to represent a combination of
qualities including the psychological understanding of the human experience
(archetypal energies), psychic or intuitive messages of all kinds, and our
visionary capacity. My special thanks to Edie Galley, host of By, For & About
Women, whose particular dedication to the success and inspiration of
women is exemplary. To learn more about the program or listen to other

Our Homes By
Sherry B. Ways, C.I.D. Our day to day demands on our lives often take a
toll on us. Work and family demands
as well as global fears of terrorism create in us a level of stress and a
level of emotional imbalance. To find
a solution, we travel to exotic places to get away from it all, to find
relaxation, peace and solitude. We
take yoga classes or get a massage.
What if we are able to come home to relaxation, peace and solitude
every day in our homes? How can we
begin to see our homes as a peaceful refuge? No matter how big or small your home is you can
create a relaxing sanctuary.
Attracting positive energy levels into your home is one of the most
important keys to developing a serene space.
Even Wayne Dyer, a national acclaimed author, in his latest book The
Power of Intention writes: “Become
aware of the energy levels of your home environment. Prayers, paintings, crystals, statues,
spiritual passages, books, magazines, the color on your walls, and even the
arrangement of furniture all create energy into which you’re catapulted for
at least half of your waking life.” Think about it.
Your home is the ultimate connection between you and the outside
world. It can be seen as our alter
ego- a representation of ourselves as well as a representation of the world
we live in. Begin to think about your home and what inspires you. Do you feel energized and inspired in your
home? Or, do you feel drained or
stressed in your environment? Colors,
lighting, materials, placement can affect your mood and overall
well-being. Before you can begin your
journey to creating your home as a relaxing sanctuary, think about your
current relationship with your home and how you can cultivate a closer more
intimate partnership. What I typically tell my clients to do is to
first search for a space within your home where you feel the most
comfortable. Remember any room or
space in your home can evoke a relaxing feeling. One way to locate where this space is is to think of a place
where you already gravitate to by habit.
Is it a favorite chair? A
small reading room or library. Or is
that front porch that you like to sit on at night watching the cars go by? Remember that you can consider any space a
relaxing one. Here are some spaces in
your home that you may want to consider: ·
A corner or a room ·
A little used storage area ·
A spot in your kitchen ·
Spare or guest bedroom ·
Portion of a garden or patio ·
Basement or attic ·
Your bedroom ·
A screened porch ·
That awkward space under your staircase In choosing your relaxation spaces consider the
desired function. Would the space be
for reading, sleeping or meditating?
Think about your personal decorating style and the mood, environment
and atmosphere you want to create.
Also consider the noise level of the space and if the space you are
seeking will be vulnerable to any outside noise or disturbances. Lastly, make sure that your space is free
of any clutter and unnecessary objects. To create a specific mood or decorating style
for relaxation, there are many sources of inspiration that you can call
upon. Here is a partial list to get
you started: ·
Decorating magazines ·
Day spas ·
Your favorite vacation spot ·
Favorite color ·
Worship center- church, synagogue, temple, etc. ·
Art ·
Parks and nature: trees,
water, grass, etc. Color is an important aspect to interior decorating,
particularly decorating for relaxation.
As an interior decorator, I have studied how color affects our mood
through color therapy. Many people do
not think what colors to choose that will evoke positive and uplifting
interior environments. Consider
these colors the next time you are seeking to paint a room in your home: Green- promotes balance, harmony, peace, hope,
growth and healing Blue-calming, restful, peaceful, spiritual Purple- comforting, protecting, spiritual,
calming Browns- promote a feeling of comfort Some examples of calming color combinations you
may want to consider include: ·
The use of neutral tones- beiges with chocolate browns- to promote
comfort and stability ·
Combining turquoise and analog blue- promotes truth and stability ·
Dark purple and gold – quietude When choosing paint for your home, be sure to
use non-toxic ecological paints which ensure a healthy living
environment. The ancient Chinese art of placement, feng shui
(pronounced “fung shway”) is a tool to assist us in decorating our
surroundings to promote the flow of positive energy or “chi”. Feng shui means wind and water. According
to the Chinese, the harmonious and uninterrupted flow of chi in our homes is
believed to enhance our well-being and our overall health. Before you consider using Feng Shui, research
the various different schools of the practice. I was personally surprised to learn in my studies that there
are many different schools and methods.
The methods you use will determine the outcome you seek. You may want to engage an experienced Feng
Shui practitioner to assist you in achieving the results you desire in your
home. The use of accessories and other soft
furnishings can also create a peaceful calming home. Candles, aquariums and fish bowls,
flowers, natural fabrics and rugs, satin and silk are just a few
examples. Consider also purchasing a
table top, floor or water fountain in your home to create that personal
refuge in your home. Remember your home reflects how you live and
your inner wellbeing. Take care of
your home and yourself. Sherry B. Ways is a Certified Interior Decorator and Color Therapist specializing in decorating for the body, mind and spirit.
